Using the Power Button
1. Press the Power Button on the My Book Elite unit.
You may hear the drive power down as the Power LED flashes
2. Wait for the drive icon to be removed from the desktop before disconnecting the
drive from the system.
Displaying the Status, Serial Number, and Temperature
You can use the WD SmartWare icon to determine whether the drive is encrypted
(locked), how full the drive is, the drive’s serial number, and the temperature condition of
the drive.
1. Click the WD SmartWare icon to display a list of drives:
2. Select the My Book. The submenu displays the serial number of the drive, the space
available (if the drive is unlocked), and the temperature condition.
Unlocking the Drive Manually
There are some situations that require you to unlock the drive manually.
The WD SmartWare Software is Not Available
You may need to unlock the drive manually in cases such as the following:
• You uninstall the software and leave the drive locked.
• You move your drive to another system, and need to unlock it without installing
the software.
To unlock the drive using the virtual CD:
1. Double-click the WD SmartWare virtual CD on the desktop.
2. Double-click the DriveUnlock icon. The WD SmartWare Drive Unlock screen
displays.
